Helping each other save lives

Tuesday 29th September was World Heart Day. We celebrated heartsafe communities in NZ.

The 29th of September was the World Heart day (W.H.D).

It was founded in 2000 by the World Heart federation to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading causes of death, claiming 17.3 million lives each year.

W.H.D is an annual event and each year’s celebrations have a theme. This year’s theme is creating heart-healthy environments.

The theme emphasizes so well the aims of Heart Safe programme: that the places where we live, work and play should decrease the risks of cardiovascular diseases and increase the chances of survival after  sudden cardiac arrest.

They should be safe places for our heart health.

We do that by:

  • An increase in the number of people who know how to deliver CPR.
  • Increase access of AEDs in public and workplaces.
  • Training people to use AEDs.
  • Ensuring AEDs are properly maintained, so they’re always ready to use.

Therefore, it would be great if we can all support our communities into becoming Heart safe.
